Collision Efficiency of Nearly Equal Cloud Drops
Recomputation of the collision efficiency of nearly equal water drops falling in air gave values which increase as the size ratio approaches uiiity for radii of the bigger drop larger than 6 3 p, and decreased as though tending toward zero for smaller radii. For the bigger radii the new computcd values are consistent with experimental results, but for radii around 40 ,U they are not.
متن کاملA stochastic droplet collision model with consideration of impact efficiency
A stochastic droplet collision model (Sommerfeld [9]), based on the creation of a fictitious collision partner is described, taking into account impact efficiencies. The model of O’Rourke [5] is considered to predict the outcome of water-droplet collisions, being grazing or coalescing, and to predict post-collision velocities. The relevance of impact efficiencies is discussed for water droplet ...
متن کاملCloud droplet sedimentation, entrainment efficiency, and subtropical stratocumulus albedo
[1] The effect of cloud droplet sedimentation on the entrainment rate and liquid water path of a nocturnal nondrizzling stratocumulus layer is examined using largeeddy simulations (LES) with bulk microphysics. In agreement with a prior study by Ackerman et al. (2004), sedimentation is found to decrease entrainment rate and thereby increase liquid water path. They suggested this is due to reduct...
متن کاملTurbulent collision efficiency of heavy particles relevant to cloud droplets
The collision efficiency of sedimenting cloud droplets in a turbulent air flow is a key input parameter in predicting the growth of cloud droplets by collision–coalescence. In this study, turbulent collision efficiency was directly computed, using a hybrid direct numerical simulation (HDNS) approach (Ayala et al 2007 J. Comput. Phys. 225 51–73). The HDNS results show that air turbulence enhance...
متن کاملNumerical Issues in Droplet Collision Modeling
A faster, more accurate replacement for existing collision algorithms has been developed. The method, called the NTC algorithm, is not grid dependent, and is much faster than older algorithms. Calculations with sixty thousand parcels required only a few CPU minutes. However, there is a significant need to develop mesh-independent momentum coupling between the gas and spray, so that the collisio...
